COMMUNITY AG DAY AT THE GUILFORD FAIRGROUNDS ON MAY 11 (10 AM TO 3 PM)

On May 11th, from 10 am to 3 pm, the Guilford Agricultural Society will host a Community “Ag Day” on the Guilford Fairgrounds to celebrate Guilford’s agricultural heritage, and to inaugurate the two new barns which have been raised on the Fairgrounds with the help of a grant from the Connecticut Department of Agriculture.

The event will include many 4H groups, as well as FFA (Future Farmers of America) schools, including the Sound School for Agriculture in New Haven, which is a prominent provider of education in agriculture to many communities without access to local farming. There will be educational displays and demonstrations in animal husbandry, bee pollination, maple syrup production, and a pedal tractor pull and agricultural “equipment touch” for kids. There will be a farmers’ market with plants for sale, perfect gifts for Mother’s Day on May 12th.

At 11 am, there will be a ribbon cutting to celebrate the construction of the two new barns, attended by the Connecticut Commissioner of Agriculture, the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, and local and state agricultural and resource agencies. The Grant Liaison representative for the Connecticut Department of Agriculture will present two plaques to the Guilford Agricultural Society celebrating the two new barns.

The displays and demonstrations will highlight Connecticut’s agricultural heritage, with participatory activities for adults and children. The Farm Museum on the Fairgrounds will be open to view antique farm equipment, with interactive exhibits, and Bishop’s Orchards will be holding an educational forum on sustainable agriculture.

There will be a food truck and some agricultural entertainment, animal displays, gardening, and planting tips for spring, and much more.

Come and enjoy the Guilford Fairgrounds and learn to have fun with agriculture at this free community event.
