CT ALERTS: Keep Your Cars and Packages Safe!

We spoke with Lieutenant Marisol Rodriguez-Velez, District Commander of the Southwest Hartford Police Department on how to protect against growing auto and package theft.

As auto and package theft continues to skyrocket across the greater Hartford area, Lieutenant Rodriguez-Velez explains that vehicle thefts tend to increase in the winter months because people leave their cars running to heat them up. About half of the cars getting stolen are Kias and Hyundais, the other half happen because people are likely leaving their keys inside of their cars. Residents should not leave their cars running and should make sure they are locked. Packages should not be left unattended and should be sent to a secure location whenever possible.

Hartford residents who own a Kia or Hyundai can come to the Hartford Police Department to get a free steering wheel lock. You do need to show proof of ownership of the car.
