There’s a new app that wants to make trick-or-treating safe this year by helping kids avoid high-risk activities. Treat Town lets them trick-or-treat online and get actual candy in real life. Created by Mars Wrigley - the maker of M&M’s, Snickers, Starburst and more - the app is their way to let families enjoy the Halloween tradition in a COVID-friendly way.

Here’s how it works: After you download Treat Town, you can sign up to be a candy giver or a trick-or-treater. Candy givers can buy virtual candy credits that they pass out to trick-or-treaters. They can also choose to open their door to anyone nearby who’s virtually trick-or-treating or just to friends and family. The trick-or-treaters collect the candy credits that can be exchanged for real candy either online or in stores. And since it’s online, they can virtually knock on doors of people they know around the country.

Treat Town also lets users decorate their virtual door and choose their favorite spooky avatars as costumes. And those who want to digitally trick-or-treat but not cash in the candy for themselves can “treat it forward” and give their candy credits to the Boys & Girls Club of America as a cash donation. The app will be available for the entire month of October and you can trick-or-treat at the Disney Haunted Mansion from October 23rd to 31st to unlock special costumes from Disney.
