A one-mile stretch of newly-paved road may look like any other in California, but it gets the honor of being the first mile of recycled plastic highway on a road anywhere in the U.S. Sustainable landscaping company TechniSoil has teamed up with the California Department of Transportation to repave part of a three-lane road using more than 150-thousand single-use plastic bottles to do it.
State transit officials say the eco-friendly road formula has been shown to be two to three times more durable than traditional asphalt pavement. And even better? The procedure generates 90% less greenhouse gas emissions than the process they currently use. Now that this pilot project in Butte County is complete, Technisoil says they’re working to get more plastic roads across the state.
Caltrans District 3 Director Amarjeet S. Benipal explains, “This process is better for the environment because it keeps plastic bottles out of landfills and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.”
