Cyber Safety: Campaign for a Bully Free Community

Listen below to Cynthia Clegg, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Middlesex County, Helen Bosch, CEO of Vista Life Innovations and Scott Driscoll, Founder of Internet Safety Concepts talk about how you can be a part of The Campaign for Bully-Free Communites.

About Campaign for Bully-Free Communities

The Campaign for Bully-Free Communities was started by the Community Foundation of Middlesex County’s Council of Business Partners, a philanthropic group of local business people who pool their resources to support positive youth development. Nine years ago they partnered with Rushford mental health professionals and developed school-based programs that have now helped close to 10,000 educators, students, and school bus drivers recognize and prevent negative social behaviors.

Each October, during National Bullying Prevention Month, the group hosts a few hundred students at the Rally For Bully-Free Communities. This year the rally will take place on October 4 at Empower Leadership Sports in Middletown.

Campaign Benefits

Each day thousands of students stay home for fear of being bullied. That means that those students lose the opportunity to learn. It is every student’s right to feel safe and be safe in school. All Connecticut schools are mandated to have a school climate plan in place that provides for a safe and POSITIVE learning environment. School-based programs are of great value because they help students help each other recognize when a person is being targeted and intentionally hurt or harmed by words or behavior, and gives them the tools to stand up for themselves or intervene on others behalf in a positive way. Student education on how to address bullying for peers is critical, as is the support of adults.
