Crab Meat Warning In Effect As Infections Spread Across Four States
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating a multi-state outbreak of a harmful bacteria which has been found in fresh, imported crab meat from Venezuela.
The bacteria, known as Vibrio parahaemolyticus, can lead to all kinds of side effects. Those infected can develop diarrhea (which tends to be watery and occasionally bloody), vomiting, abdominal cramps, nausea, fever and stomach pain. Symptoms usually appear within a day of infection, but the timing can vary.
So far, there have been 12 confirmed cases of infection across four states: eight in Maryland, two in Louisiana, one in Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. Four of those infected have been hospitalized.
