MONDAY 5/12/14 : 1967: The first Jimi Hendrix album, Are You Experienced?, is released. Songs include "Foxy Lady," "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze."

AND 1948: Born on this day, Steve Winwood, English musician whose genres include rock, blue-eyed soul, rhythm and blues, blues rock, pop rock, and jazz. A multi-instrumentalist, he can play keyboards, bass guitar, drums, guitar, mandolin, violin, and other strings. Winwood was a key member of the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and Go. He also had a successful solo career with hits including "Valerie", "Back in the High Life Again" and two US Billboard Hot 100 number ones; "Higher Love" and "Roll With It". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic in 2004.[2]In 2005 Winwood was honored as a BMI Icon at the annual BMI London Awards for his "enduring influence on generations of music makers."[3] In 2008, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Winwood #33 in its 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Winwood has won two Grammy Awards. (Traffic, Blind Faith and The Spencer Davis Group)

AND 1950: Born on this day,Billy Squier, Squier played for two all-but-forgotten bands, the Sidewinders and Piper, during the 1970s before embarking on his much more successful solo career. (Piper's greatest claim to fame was as the opening act for KISS during that band's legendary 1977 tour.) Squier's third solo album, Emotions In Motion, produced another US Top 40 hit, "Everybody Wants You" (#32). The title track, which featured Queen frontman Freddie Mercury on backing vocals, was also a minor hit. In 1983 Squier began his first American headline tour to promote the album - only to be upstaged by his opening act, Def Leppard, who had just broken through in the US.

WEDNESDAY 05/14/14 : 1988, Led Zeppelin reunited for the Atlantic Records 40th anniversary party at Madison Square Garden, New York, appearing with Jason Bonham the son of John Bonham on drums. Other acts performing included Foreigner, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Genesis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Wilson Pickett and Ben E. King.

THURSDAY 05/15/14 : 1965, Bob Dylan’s single 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' peaked at No.39 in the US charts, giving Dylan his first US top 40 hit. John Lennon was reported to find the song so captivating that he didn't know how he'd be able to write a song that could compete with it.

FRIDAY 05/16/14 : 1965 : The Rolling Stones' limo is attacked by female fans on the way back to their hotel after a show in Long Beach, CA, standing on the roof in such numbers that it caves in. While the band holds the roof up with their hands, the chauffeur speeds away, leaving fans to fall on the road.
